Dissertation: Nou oblije pale mo-to: Code-switching between Haitian and Guianese French Creoles and their lexifier in French Guiana
Description: Studies of intra-sentential code-switching tend to focus on obviously distinct varieties, such as French-Kali’na and English-French switching. A variety of constraints on code-switching have been proposed based on pairs such as these, as well as criteria to distinguish nonce borrowings from language switches. This dissertation studies mixing of French with Haitian and Guianese, two closely related French-based creoles spoken in Cayenne, French Guiana. It investigates whether the same linguistic constraints and criteria used to predict when languages are integrated are also appropriate for situations of dialect mixing.
